Sugar Pine Point State Park
Living History
Day
Sugar Pine Point State Park’s Pine Lodge, the mansion built by Isaias
W. Hellman, a president of Wells Fargo Bank, will be the centerpiece of
Living History Day on July 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All performances and
activities at the event are free, and parking is $8.
There will be guided
nature hikes along the Washoe Path of the Water Babies and a hike to what
was once the highest lighthouse in the world in the Ed Z’Berg Nature
Preserve. The more sedentary will enjoy listening to the blue grass melodies
of The Wronglers led by Warren Hellman, descendant of the banking family
that built the mansion. Other relaxing activities include historical lectures
and movies, and an open house to meander through the mansion.
Pine Lodge, also known
as the Ehrman mansion, is a three-story, shingled home built in 1903 by
Hellman, a pioneering California banker. Tours of the mansion are usually
$5 for adults and $3 for juniors, but all tours and activities are free
on July 31.
On Living History
Day visitors can enjoy the gracious lifestyle that former owners Florence
and Sydney Ehrman shared with family and guests on the West Shore with
vignettes enacted on the grounds and in the many rooms of the mansion by
volunteers in period costumes. Popular returning actors include the family’s
butler, the upstairs maid and the cook. Among the artists in residence
are Andy Skaff, Bill Clausen and Cathy McClelland, capturing the beauty
of the landscape, the buildings and the wildlife.
Visitors may visit
with family descendants, such as Frances Dinkelspiel, who will reveal family
anecdotes about her great-great grandfather in an historical talk. She
also will be signing copies of the recently published biography, “Towers
of Gold: Isaias Hellman and the Creation of California.”
There also will be
a variety of educational and historical exhibits. The vintage car Concours
d’Elegance on the lawn is an annual favorite. Classic wooden and
aluminum boats are on display at the mansion’s two boathouses, along
with docent and video presentations. Tahoe boat historian and author Carol
Van Etten will provide insight into boating on the lake. And, learn about
the history of the lake from the perspective of the Washoe elders.
Children receive a
free passport to the 1930s that provides access to games such as croquet,
badminton, bowling, pick-up-sticks and jacks. Children can make old-fashioned
arts and crafts such as a painting of the lodge and acorn jewelry. Children
also play dress-up, like the actors in the park.
Living History Day
gives visitors the only opportunity of the year to go inside General Phipps’
Cabin. Frontiersman William Phipps came to Tahoe in 1860 to homestead 160
acres that eventually became part of Sugar Pine Point State Park. The cabin
built by Phipps in 1872 is still standing. A mountain man will tell stories
of pioneer life and demonstrate tools and black-powder rifles.
Visitors may pack
a picnic lunch to enjoy on the lawn overlooking the lake or, for about
$5, purchase a full meal. The hand-dipped ice cream cones are always a
great dessert treat on a warm, summer day.
For more information or a schedule of events, visit www.laketahoelivinghistory.com
or call (530) 525-6402. The park is located about 10 miles south of Tahoe
